The Death of Jesus

Matt. 27:45-56

45Now from the sixth hour there was darkness over all the land until the ninth hour. 46 And about the ninth hour Jesus cried out with a loud voice, saying, “Eli, Eli, lema sabachthani?” that is, “My God, my God, why have you forsaken me?” 47 And some of the bystanders, hearing it, said, “This man is calling Elijah.” 48 And one of them at once ran and took a sponge, filled it with sour wine, and put it on a reed and gave it to him to drink. 49 But the others said, “Wait, let us see whether Elijah will come to save him.” 50 And Jesus cried out again with a loud voice and yielded up his spirit.
51 And behold, the curtain of the temple was torn in two, from top to bottom. And the earth shook, and the rocks were split. 52 The tombs also were opened. And many bodies of the saints who had fallen asleep were raised, 53 and coming out of the tombs after his resurrection they went into the holy city and appeared to many. 54 When the centurion and those who were with him, keeping watch over Jesus, saw the earthquake and what took place, they were filled with awe and said, “Truly this was the Son of God!”
55 There were also many women there, looking on from a distance, who had followed Jesus from Galilee, ministering to him, 56 among whom were Mary Magdalene and Mary the mother of James and Joseph and the mother of the sons of Zebedee.

Jesus' Side Is Pierced

John19:31-37
31 Since it was the day of Preparation, and so that the bodies would not remain on the cross on the Sabbath (for that Sabbath was a high day), the Jews asked Pilate that their legs might be broken and that they might be taken away. 32 So the soldiers came and broke the legs of the first, and of the other who had been crucified with him. 33 But when they came to Jesus and saw that he was already dead, they did not break his legs. 34 But one of the soldiers pierced his side with a spear, and at once there came out blood and water.35 He who saw it has borne witness—his testimony is true, and he knows that he is telling the truth—that you also may believe. 36 For these things took place that the Scripture might be fulfilled: “Not one of his bones will be broken.” 37 And again another Scripture says,“They will look on him whom they have pierced.”With sincere gratitude

The Death of Christ Means Life for Those who Believe This Glass Collage was create for Stations of the Cross, the last station, the death of Jesus.  The broken glass symbolizes our broken bodies full of sin, the earth shaking, the rocks breaking.   As I was reading Matthew 27 on the death of Jesus, verse 27 stood out for me for the first time I read about the Saints raising from the dead at the moment of Jesus' death.  I pictured the saints in their burial caves in flowing robes filing out of the caves like living water flowing into the blood of Christ.  Jesus cried out and yielded up His Spirit.  I remembered the spear in His side and read John 19:31-37 and read that His side was pierced with a spear and out came the blood and water. .  The light blue glass is the "Living Water (The Spirit),  the blue glass symbolizes the living water being poured out of our Lord's side and the same blue glass being used for the Saints, who were raised from death (asleep) with the life blood and water (Spirit) that is emptied from Christ on the Cross.

Christ not only gave up his life in body but also His spirit.  In that way He became totally separated from God.

In the Collage The Death of Jesus happens below the Saints symbolizing Christ  lowering himself lower  then the saints filing from the cave.  Christ lowered Himself, lower then us, lower then the angels.
Psalm 8:5 says  "Yet you have made him a little lower than the heavenly beings and crowned him with glory and honor." Jesus gave His life in body and His life in Spirit, so that when we believe we can have life, living water, the same Spirit that God gave up and emptied himself to us.
Philippians 2:5-8
"Who, being in very nature God, did not consider equality with God something to be grasped, but made himself nothing, taking the very nature of a servant, being make in human likeness. And being found in appearance as a man, he humbled himself and became obedient to death---even death on a cross!"We are then united with God again.
What Christ did, no one but God can do.
John 19:37
